An Update That Updates

First of all, I’m back from Europe now, and I guess from Southern California too, so I should be posting regularly again.

A couple of months ago, I wrote about absolutely must have Firefox Extensions, including Adblock. Well, little did I know but development for the adblock extension stopped a long time ago update: has split between a number of different authors, and now a better version was available: Adblock Plus. It has tons of bug fixes and added features, of which my favorite is subscriptions (note: as KNK points out, there area few different choices when it comes to Adblock, I however use Adblock Plus).

Basically, instead of importing a list and then slowly shaping it to fit all of the sites that you visit, you can subscribe to a list that someone already has and keeps updated. This way, everytime that person updates their filters, you automatically get the updates too. Very cool stuff and I have my list up for all of you to subscribe to if you’re interested. I cannot stress how much better the internet is with adblock plus (and firefox for that matter), so I highly suggest you guys check it out.

Actually Eugene your wrong. Adblock development has not stopped. As a matter fact it is is alive and kicking. The person who originally did Adblock Plus took over Adblock to make it better then Adblock Plus is Adblock plus was turning into a resource hog *shrugs* Adblock and Adblock plus right now as at the same level of features pretty much except for resource levels. I find Adblock with Adblock G. Updater to be the best combination.The development of Adblock stopped a long time ago but some time ago it was started again … thought I let you know :) . You better off using adblock over adblock plus.

Michael McDonald, the developer of Adblock Plus 0.5, has changed to the Adblock project and is trying to develop it further now. For that reason starting with Adblock Plus 0.6 the main developer of Adblock Plus is me (Wladimir Palant).

Jon you’re right - people can find the history of it all here: http://adblockplus.org/en/history. However, the history of adblock concerns me less than the usablility of the extension itself, as well as the simplicity of the idea behind adblock. Its genius and I highly recommend that every firefox user install it.Thanks for the correct info :)

And you don’t want me to throw it away, right? So here you have it:KNK, I’m afraid you are the one who is wrong. The “history of adblock” you are citing was written in January when it looked like Adblock might come to live again. This was a very short period that lasted less than a month - and now Adblock is abandoned again. Michael McDonald is only nominally a co-developer on the project, he doesn’t have access to anything. And he is the only one who has been seen since February. Even when I discovered a security hole in Adblock addons.mozilla.org had to give Michael upload privileges, that’s why there is Adblock 0.5.3.043 that fixes the bug. Take a look at the official homepage - it still offers you to download the buggy version.

As to Adblock Plus being a “resource hog” - I would like to see some proof :) Please don’t mention the download size, it is mostly because the file contains images and 29 locales (yes, twenty-nine languages). And I really hope the statement about Adblock and Adblock Plus being on the same level in terms of features was a joke…
