He Part 2 ... glad you posted something for the Windows people out there .... but .... i just got to give my 2 cents on this one as well :D .

Antivirus ... AVG is good but I wouldn't consider it the best choice. Avast Home Edition I would consider the best choice especially since they have a pretty damn good AV Engine in their applications. You have so many features for free it's not even funny the software isn't bloatware like some of the commercial apps out there .... which I will highly recommend everyone stays away from. McAfee and Norton don't really protect you anymore ... even our corporate licensed Symantec virus scanner doesn't do the job anymore Avast does a better job ... imagine that!

CD Burning ... Nero is the best commercial CD burning app out there ... worth every penny ... I got a good sub with the basics that everyone needs though just incase there are some people out there that can afford the price tag on Nero. The program is called CDBurnerXP ... Burns Audio, Data, and ISOs .... can't ask for more has a simple layout and handles pretty much any format CD/DVD out there. For free you can't complain :P . The app is powerful for what it is and the next version coming out will be even better!

GAIM all the way! Trillian .... eh ... was good awhile back but not I don't see it as a "cool" app anymore Gaim is very expandable it's basically universal (can be used on linux and macs) and best of all it's free. The things Trillian offers in it's free version is just the basics if you want ot fork over the money then you will of course get all the features but why pay for it when Gaim has it already or has a free plugin for it.

SpyBot S&D, SpywareBlaster, and Windows Defender is the cocktail every windows user needs to make sure their computer is safe from spyware, malware, and any other baddies that are out there to get them. Adaware doesn't play nice with other anti-spyware programs and is an app that likes to be solo on the job.

SmartFTP has lost its touch once it released 2.0 ... I still like SmartFTP ... but I can;t take the bag screens anymore ... I use Filezilla now which does the job great ... and without the nag screens.

Do not forget that VLC is also available on Windows and with the K-lite codec which has a mini media player on there ... it's like the ultimate playback package ... you will never have a problem with playing something back with those 2 things on hand.

Once again great post ... I just had to put in my 2 cents in though. Remember always if you can stick to the free software it's typically the same or better then the stuff you buy out there.

Here are the links of the software I mentiond:

Good collection of programs! I have built a few systems, and figuring out all the right programs can be tricky. Trillian and Gaim are both great programs, but with the internet software revolution in full swing, a quality web-based alternative is available: http://www.meebo.com/. It supports AIM (and ICQ), Yahoo!, MSN, and Jabber/GTalk and has a lot of great features such as message logs.
